Title

Coburn Hall in Ivy, 1887-1888

Description

Taken during the late nineteenth century, this photo features Coburn Hall, an academic hall that housed both the department of Agriculture and Natural History. Named in honor of former Governor of Maine, Abner Coburn, president of the University’s Board of Trustees from 1867-1879, the building contained the college of Agriculture’s library and a natural history museum known around campus for its beautiful botanical collections. The ivy plants that used to cascade down the building can be traced back to a late nineteenth century UMaine tradition called ‘Ivy Day’. During this celebration, graduating seniors would adorn their respective department buildings with ivy plants.
