Engaging Students in Documenting Community Histories

Title

Engaging Students in Documenting Community Histories

Description

Everyone creates archival material, but not everyone’s voice is included in the archival record. Archivists today are working to create a more thorough representation of history by including more voices, experiences, and perspectives. Through interactive demonstrations and discussions, this workshop explores how students can participate in creating a more inclusive history by documenting the experiences of their school or community. It introduces resources available to educators through the Maine Contemporary Archives including: 1) Omeka.net, a platform for building and exhibiting digital collections 2) lesson plans that incorporate primary sources and creative projects that students can share beyond the classroom 3) technology kits for recording and digitizing community history.
